Neon Tetra (Neon Tetra) is one of the most popular ornamental fish species in the world, thanks to its vibrant beauty and schooling behavior. This article guides you on how to properly care for Neon Tetras, from selecting fish, setting up the tank, feeding, to daily health care.
What is Neon Tetra and Why Are They So Popular?
Neon Tetra (scientific name Paracheirodon innesi) originates from the Amazon rivers in Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. They were discovered and introduced to the ornamental fish industry in 1936 and immediately became a global sensation. The main reasons for Neon Tetra's popularity:
Unique vibrant colors: The iridescent blue stripe along the body that glows under lighting, combined with the bright red belly of mature adults, creates a jewel-like beauty. Special schooling behavior: Neon Tetras live in schools, and when moving together, they create an effect like a moving wave of light in the tank. Suitable for all skill levels: Relatively easy to care for, inexpensive, and easy to purchase. Versatile: Suitable for nano tanks, planted aquariums, and community tanks with various other species. Mature adults are only 3-4cm long, very uniform.
Distinguishing Neon Tetra and Similar Tetra Species
Many beginner aquarium hobbyists often confuse Tetra species with similar appearances. Below are the most commonly confused species:
Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi): Blue dorsal stripe, red belly from the middle of the body towards the tail, size 3-4cm. All individuals have a red belly.
Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi): Similar to Neon Tetra but larger (5-6cm) and the red belly runs from head to tail (Neon Tetra only has red from the middle back). These species are both beautiful, but Cardinal Tetra is usually more expensive.
Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi): Has black and yellow stripes, no red stripe. Easy to care for and inexpensive.
